Exciting Changes for Immigrant Advocacy in Missouri:
IFCLA begins transition to become an inclusive, immigrant-led statewide organization committed to building power for systemic changes that honor the dignity of all
St. Louis, MO - The Inter-Faith Committee on Latin America (IFCLA) announced today that they are taking an important step towards an inclusive vision for immigrant rights in Missouri: IFCLA will become an organization that builds statewide immigrant-led community power to honor the dignity of all people. Over the next 10 months, IFCLA will build an aggressive yet sustainable 3-year plan to engage communities across the state and transfer the power of the organization to those whose very lives depend on the success of this vision.
Sara John, Executive Director of IFCLA: “With great excitement and humility, our team is thrilled to expand our efforts. We look forward to building new relationships and strengthening existing ones, developing community-led legislative strategies, and changing the way immigration justice happens in our state. We will continue to prioritize transformational human connection in all that we do, while fighting to reduce the harmful impacts of privilege, supremacy and bias. We will center immigrant leadership in our organization and in our state, in order to build collective power that will abolish destructive systems and honor human dignity. We are eager to further develop this vision together, and collectively pursue a future rooted in liberation, justice and love.”
IFCLA has been an active presence on the St. Louis social justice scene since the 1980s, when several individuals began regular solidarity trips to Central America and area congregations participated in the sanctuary movement, in order to accompany neighbors in Latin America and equip US citizens to take legislative action against harmful interventionist policies in the region. Recently, IFCLA has been recognized for the work they led to support Alex Garcia and his family through over 3.5 years of sanctuary at Christ Church UCC in Maplewood, where he lived from September 2017 until February 24, 2021, when Alex claimed his freedom and walked out of the church. In the last 5 years, hundreds of people in St. Louis have been part of IFCLA’s ICE Accompaniment efforts, attended an Immigration 101 presentation, volunteered with the Immigrant Family Emergency Response (IFER) Fund, or have come to know IFCLA another way. Part of the organization’s journey with Mr. Garcia demonstrated just how hard it is to protect one man’s dignity, one family’s right to love and live freely. IFCLA believes that every single person, every single family, deserves the same freedom that Alex is still fighting for - and that it will require much more community power in order to change the laws and policies that would make this possible.
Anjali Singh, Chair of Missouri Immigrant and Refugee Advocates (MIRA): “Missouri Immigrant and Refugee Advocates (MIRA) has been supporting immigrants and refugees by aiming to protect rights, building capacity, and advocating for immigrant and refugee populations within Missouri. Most recently, MIRA and IFCLA have been collaborating to form a plan to come together organizationally to best serve immigrants and refugees in our region. This plan will continue and expand the crucial work to protect and advocate for immigrant and refugee rights in Missouri. We are excited and fully support IFCLA's commitment to honor our shared vision to create a more welcoming and inclusive Missouri.”
IFCLA and MIRA have collaborated in the past and both recognize the vital need for continued work to ensure immigrant rights in Missouri are strengthened and protected.
Ellen Ziegemeier, Convener of IFCLA’s Board of Directors: “Our boards have worked together over the last few months to develop a plan to sustain our shared vision for statewide organizing, education and advocacy with and for immigrants in order to protect human rights and pursue equity and justice in Missouri. As MIRA transitions to a lesser role, IFCLA is honored to expand our work both geographically and demographically to truly build an inclusive and welcoming Missouri.”
While the team knows there will be many needs and challenges in the pursuit of this vision, IFCLA’s efforts are firmly rooted in the commitment to build an inclusive immigrant-led statewide movement, which requires an anti-racist, equity-driven and community-centered foundation. To facilitate this transition, IFCLA will launch new spaces for leadership in the organization, to include voices, perspectives and wisdom from people who are undocumented in Missouri, immigrants and mixed status families, diverse faith communities, dedicated allies, political champions and more.

IFCLA has a long history of building relationships that honor the inherent human dignity of all persons and collaborating to fight for just policies and laws. The current iteration of the organization stands on nearly 40 years of dedicated, passionate labor, which emerged from deep solidarity and accompaniment with people in Latin America. Today, the incredible staff team leads IFCLA with a very clear shared vision: change the way immigrant justice looks in Missouri in order to center the voices of diverse, directly impacted immigrant communities to build lasting community power in pursuit of radical inclusion.

Cambios Emocionantes en el Apoyo a Inmigrantes en Missouri:
IFCLA comienza transición para ser una organización a nivel estatal que es inclusiva, liderada por inmigrantes y comprometida en construir poder para cambios sistemáticos que honren la dignidad de todas las personas
St. Louis, MO - El Comité Interreligioso Sobre Latinoamérica (IFCLA por sus siglas en inglés) anunció hoy que están tomando un importante paso hacia una visión inclusiva para los derechos de los inmigrantes en Missouri: IFCLA se convertirá en una organización que, bajo el liderato de inmigrantes, construye poder comunitario a nivel estatal para honrar la dignidad de todas las personas. Por los próximos 10 meses, IFCLA construirá un plan agresivo y sustentable de 3 años para involucrar a las comunidades a través del estado y transferir el poder de la organización a aquellas personas cuyas vidas dependen del éxito de esta visión.
Sara John, Directora Ejecutiva de IFCLA: “Con gran emoción y humildad, nuestro equipo está emocionado por la expansión de nuestros esfuerzos. Esperamos construir nuevas relaciones y fortalecer las existentes, desarrollar estrategias legislativas lideradas por la comunidad y cambiar la manera en que la justicia migratoria ocurre en el estado. IFCLA ha sido una presencia activa en la escena de justicia social en San Luis desde los años ochenta, cuando varios individuos comenzaron a realizar regularmente viajes de solidaridad a Centroamérica y congregaciones locales participaron en el movimiento de santuario para inmigrantes, para poder acompañar a vecines de Latinoamérica y equipar a ciudadanos de EEUU a tomar acciones legislativas contra políticas intervencionistas en la región. Recientemente, IFCLA ha sido reconocida por el trabajo que lideraron para apoyar a Alex García y a su familia durante tres años de santuario en la Christ Church UCC en Maplewood, donde él vivió desde septiembre de 2017 hasta febrero 24 de 2021, cuando Alex reclamó su libertad y caminó fuera de la iglesia. En los últimos 5 años, cientos de personas en San Luis han sido parte de los esfuerzos del programa de Acompañamiento para Inmigrantes a ICE de IFCLA, han atendido a una presentación de Inmigración 101, hecho trabajo voluntario con el Fondo de Respuesta de Emergencia para Familias Inmigrantes (IFER por sus siglas en inglés), o han conocido a IFCLA por algún otro medio. Parte de la travesía de la organización con el señor García demostró lo difícil que es defender la dignidad de una persona, el derecho de una familia para amar y vivir libremente. IFCLA cree que cada persona, cada familia, merece la misma libertad por la que Alex continúa luchando - y que se requerirá de mucho más poder comunitario para poder cambiar las leyes y políticas que harían esto posible.
Anjali Singh, Defensores de Inmigrantes y Refugiados de Missouri (MIRA por sus siglas en Inglés): “Defensores de Inmigrantes y Refugiados de Missouri (MIRA) ha apoyado a inmigrantes y refugiados aspirando a proteger derechos, crear capacidad y respaldando las poblaciones inmigrantes en Missouri. Recientemente, MIRA e IFCLA han colaborado para formar un plan para unirse organizacionalmente y servir mejor a la comunidad inmigrante y refugiada de la región. Este plan continuará y expandirá el trabajo crucial de proteger y defender los derechos de las personas inmigrantes y refugiadas en Missouri. Estamos emocionades y apoyamos totalmente el compromiso de IFCLA de honrar nuestra visión compartida de crear un Missouri más acogedor e inclusivo.”
IFCLA y MIRA han colaborado en el pasado y ambas reconocen la vital necesidad del trabajo continuo para garantizar que los derechos de la comunidad inmigrante en Missouri sean fortalecidos y protegidos.

Al mismo tiempo que el equipo está al tanto de que habrán muchas necesidades y retos en la realización de esta visión, los esfuerzos de IFCLA están firmemente enraizados en el compromiso para construir un movimiento inclusivo y liderado por la comunidad inmigrante a nivel estatal, lo que requiere una fundación antiracista, centrada en la comunidad e impulsada por la equidad. Para facilitar esta transición, IFCLA lanzará nuevos espacios para liderazgo en la organización, para incluir voces, perspectivas y sabiduría de parte de personas que están indocumentadas en Missouri, inmigrantes y familias con estatus mixto, de diversas comunidades de fe, aliades dedicades, campeones políticos y más.

Rabbi Daniel Bogard, Central Reform Congregation y Co-Convocador de la Junta de Directores de IFCLA: “Una y otra vez en la Biblia Hebrea --más que cualquier otro mandamiento- se nos recuerda que no debemos oprimir al inmigrante; que debemos aprovechar nuestras propias historias de opresión para cultivar empatía dentro de nosotres mismes y nuestras comunidades. Durante estos tiempos cuando el optimismo y la esperanza pueden parecer tan lejos, es increíblemente inspirador ver a IFCLA tomar un paso hacia arriba y aceptar el reto de ayudar a Missouri a ser el acogedor y amoroso hogar que siempre ha podido ser -y que aún puede ser. ”
IFCLA tiene una larga historia de construir relaciones que honran la inherente dignidad humana de todas las personas y colaborando para luchar por políticas y leyes justas. La iteración actual de la organización de alza sobre cuarenta años de labor dedicada y apasionada, los cuales emergieron de una solidaridad y acompañamiento profundos con la gente de Latinoamérica. Hoy, el increíble equipo de IFCLA lidera con una visión clara y compartida: cambiar la manera en que la justicia migratoria se ve en Missouri para poder centrar las voces de comunidades inmigrantes diversas y directamente impactadas para construir poder comunitario duradero en la búsqueda de inclusión radical.
