Alex Belongs Here: Week of Action Recap

September 16-23 marked the Week of Action for Alex Garcia on the occasion of his first anniversary of sanctuary on September 21st. To raise awareness of Alex’s sanctuary status and the reality of his family’s separation, IFCLA executive director Sara John traveled with Alex’s wife Carly Garcia and MICA Project attorney Nicole Cortes to Washington, D.C. for three days of advocacy and engagement with members of Congress.

Carly, Sara and Nicole attended a meeting of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, in which the team supported national activists with a walkout and silent protest to the government’s separation of families and pattern of detaining children.

Carly met with staffers for Sen. Claire McCaskill, Sen. Roy Blunt, Sen. Dick Durbin, Rep. Jason Smith, and Rep. Lacy Clay.

Carly, Nicole and Sara met with Rep. Lacy Clay, who was able to talk to Alex and Pastor Becky via Skype during the meeting as well.

Christ Church UCC hosted a special service for Alex on Sunday, September 23rd. Sara John preached and Carly Garcia gave a moving Mission Moment.

Diario Digital live-streamed dialogues between Sara John and the Garcias, reflecting on the events of the Week of Action.
