September 21st marks two years Alex Garcia has been living in sanctuary at Christ Church UCC Maplewood. Alex, his family, the congregation and the community remain committed to justice. When the rights of some in America are threatened, all of our rights are threatened. We will stand with Alex until he is able to return to his daily life and a life of dignity with his family.
Please join us on September 21st as Alex’s wife, Carly and supporters pilgrimage from Robert A. Young Federal building, where Immigration Customs Enforcement office is located, to Christ Church UCC Maplewood where Alex Garcia is desperately waiting for a miracle.
The event will begin about 8am with a prayer vigil outside of the federal building. Then, we will walk in prayerful pilgrimage the 7.8 miles back to the church. We anticipate the pilgrimage will take about 2-3 hours, and we will gather in joyful resistance with Alex and those unable to make the pilgrimage, who will wait for our arrival at the church. Food and celebration will follow as we recommit ourselves to liberation, justice and dignity.
There are opportunities for congregations and organizations to show support by “sponsoring” a mile-marker: commit to having a stationary presence at each mile marker during the pilgrimage where your group can greet and encourage pilgrims with signs, energy, refreshments, etc. Plus, if your congregation/organization will participate, we’d love to invite you to create a banner to be carried during the walk. Click here for some ideas and inspiration.
Additionally, we will soon launch a way to “Sponsor a Step” for each person who commits to make the pilgrimage. Funds will be used to continue supporting the Garcia Family, as well as to support additional advocacy for Alex’s liberation, including at least two additional delegations to Washington DC to meet with members of Congress and specifically those who have a role in moving Alex’s Law through the House. The next trip is scheduled for the week of September 23; details coming soon.
Please stay tuned for event updates - and be sure to tell your friends and family!
