As we all know September 21, 2019 marks 2 years (730 days) Alex Garcia has been living in sanctuary at Christ Church UCC Maplewood, separated from his family. You can find out more here: https://stl-ifcla.org/alex-belongs-here.

On July 12, 2019 Rep. Wm. Lacy Clay (MO-1) introduced H.R. 3750, a private immigration bill that would permanently stop Alex’s deportation and grant him permanent residency, so he can be reunited with his family in Southern Missouri where he belongs. Shortly thereafter, Carly and Sara traveled to Washington DC as part of the national Sanctuary Collective to advocate for H.R. 3750 and request private bills for all families living in sanctuary. Through multiple meetings with members of Congress and their staff, we learned that our Representatives do not hear the support from our communities, congregations, organizations and individuals. They aren’t convinced that Alex or other families living in sanctuary should be a priority.

You are invited to participate in a series of actions over the next few months to ensure that Congress will prioritize justice for all American families. During the 2019 congressional August recess, we need your help to show Rep. Clay that the Garcia Family has your support by sending him postcards and much more! We want to express how grateful we are for the introduction of HR 3750 and urge the Congressman to continue advocating for HR 3750. To get Alex out of the church, we need Rep. Clay to be our CHAMPION! We need him to do everything possible to move this bill through committee, the House, and ultimately the Senate, so it can be sent to the President before the end of this session (1/1/2021).

In September, we will send additional information to all of our supporters who send postcards, with suggestions for our collective follow-up when Rep. Clay gets back to Capitol Hill. We might even need folks to travel to Washington, DC, in late September to help us ensure that this family and other American families are not forgotten amid the flurry of end-of-year timelines, Congressional races, and of course, the Presidential election.

  1. Can you sign and send a postcard?

  2. Can you organize a group of friends and family to sign postcards?

  3. Can you organize a team at your congregation or organization to sign postcards?

Click “I Stand WITH ALEX” below to join this campaign. When you fill out the form, a member of our staff will follow up with you and provide additional resources, confirm logistics, and anything else you need. If you have questions, please call Carly at the IFCLA office, 314-721-2977.
