  • Kirkwood United Church of Christ 1603 Dougherty Ferry Road Kirkwood, MO, 63122 United States (map)

Kirkwood UCC and the Interfaith Committee on Latin America (IFCLA) are excited to work together to offer this 6-week Lenten course on immigration. The course will be led by Sara John, Executive Director of IFCLA. Participants will learn about the historical context of Latin American immigration to the US, the current state of US border and immigration policy, and the local impact of these policies. We will also discuss how the orienting stories of different congregations and faiths all point us toward honoring the human dignity of all and welcoming the strangers among us. Course objectives:
1. Learn about the history of US involvement and intervention in Latin America.
2. Review US immigration law and policy, and impacts at the border and locally.
3. Contextualize this history in current immigrant realities.
4. Evaluate and prepare: “How am I/are we called to respond?”

Course materials will include academic articles, personal reflections, multi-faith perspectives, podcasts, films, and more. We will meet in the KUCC Sanctuary from 11 am – 12 pm, for 6 weeks. The course also includes 1-2 hours of suggested reading/watching/listening and reflection to be done in between our group meetings. Our time together will focus on discussion and small group work.
